Kathy Grant, Toronto Regional Coordinator, Block by Block

Born in Montreal, Kathy is a Public Historian and founder of Legacy Voices which ensures Black Canadian History and Military History is documented and preserved. Her efforts were formally acknowledged in 2012, when Kathy received a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Kathy has made educational presentations to municipalities, schools, and community organizations promoting an inclusive approach to storytelling and historical documentation. Connecting to her audience through social media, Kathy continues to engage a diverse audience receiving half million views on her page annually.

Kathy’s father immigrated to Canada from Barbados in 1946 after serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force in WWII and her mother immigrated to Canada  from Barbados in 1959.

Née à Montréal, Kathy est une spécialiste en histoire publique et la fondatrice de Legacy Voices, qui s’assure que l’histoire des Noirs canadiens et l’histoire militaire soient documentées et conservées. Ses efforts ont été reconnus formellement en 2012, quand Kathy a reçu une Médaille du jubilé de diamant de la Reine.

Kathy a fait des présentations pédagogiques dans des municipalités, des écoles et des organismes communautaires, promouvant une approche inclusive du récit et de la documentation historique. Créant des liens avec son public à travers les médias sociaux, Kathy continue à impliquer un public divers, générant un demi-million de pages visionnées par année.

Le père de Kathy a immigré au Canada de la Barbade en 1946 après avoir servi dans l’Aviation royale canadienne pendant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, et sa mère a immigré au Canada de la Barbade en 1959.


Phyllis Lewis, Montreal Regional Coordinator, Block by Block

Born in Jamaica, Phyllis Lewis moved to Canada with her family at a young age. Growing up in Toronto she developed an interest in books, music, movies and technology. She worked at the National Film Board of Canada for 12 years as a digital editing technician on documentaries and animated films. Later she co-created, Project Media and Next-Gen NDG developing and facilitating workshops for a new generation of media creators. She lives in Montreal where she continues to work and collaborate on a variety of creative projects.

Phyllis Lewis, coordonnatrice régionale pour Montréal, Quartier par quartier

Née en Jamaïque, Phyllis Lewis a déménagé au Canada avec sa famille à un tout jeune âge. Grandissant à Toronto, elle s’est mise à s’intéresser aux livres, à la musique, au cinéma et à la technologie. Elle a travaillé pour l’Office national du film du Canada durant 12 ans en tant que technicienne de montage numérique pour les documentaires et les films animés. Plus tard, elle a co créé, Project Media ainsi que Next-Gen NDG; elle a aussi développé et animé des ateliers pour une nouvelle génération de créateurs médiatiques. Elle vit à Montréal où elle continue à travailler et à collaborer sur divers projets créatifs.


Richard N. Liu, Vancouver Regional Coordinator, Block by Block

Born and raised in Canada, Richard resided in Beijing for over 20 years, starting the influential “Canadians in China” network and founded the Canadian Alumni Network that connects thousands of individuals currently in China who attended Canada’s post-secondary institutions. He was educated at the University of British Columbia and Peking University, and his family has had strong Canada-China ties for 3 generations. His Great-Uncle, Dr. Liu Shih-shun, was China’s first Ambassador to Canada in the 1940s, and his father, Dr. Liu Dun-ren built relations in education, culture and tourism for 3 decades.

Richard has worked in public relations, education, diplomacy, and major event organization. He’s been a leader in the development of a wide variety of volunteer projects in China, such as the Terry Fox Run and Special Olympics in Beijing. Richard has volunteered for 3 Olympic Games; and was also Team Attaché, a key member of the Canadian Paralympic Committee delegation for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Summer Games.

Richard N. Liu, coordonnateur régional pour Vancouver, Quartier par quartier

Richard est né et a grandi au Canada, mais a vécu à Beijing pendant plus de 20 ans, où il a démarré le réseau influent « Canadiens en Chine » ainsi que fondé le Réseau canadien des anciens, qui met en lien des milliers d’individus qui habitent présentement en Chine et qui ont fréquenté des établissements postsecondaires canadiens. Il a été formé à la University of British Colombia et à l’Université de Beijing, et sa famille tisse des liens Canada-Chine étroits depuis 3 générations. Son grand-oncle, le Dr Liu Shih-shun, a été le premier ambassadeur du Canada en Chine dans les années 1940, et son père, le Dr. Liu Dun-ren a élaboré des relations en éducation, en culture et en tourisme pendant 3 décennies.

Richard a travaillé en relations publiques, en éducation, en diplomatie et en organisation de grands évènements. Il a été un chef de file dans le développement d’une grande variété de projets de bénévolat en Chine, comme la Journée Terry Fox ainsi que les Jeux olympiques spéciaux à Beijing. Richard a été bénévole dans 3 Jeux olympiques et a aussi endossé le titre d’attaché d’équipe, un membre clé de la délégation du comité paralympique canadien pour les Jeux paralympiques d’été de Beijing en 2008.


Vidhya Elango, Toronto Fellow, Block by Block

Vidhya Elango is a second-generation suburban kid, who currently lives in downtown Toronto. Her parents arrived in the GTA in the late 80s by way of the United States. Vidhya is currently working on a degree in linguistics and anthropology at the University of Toronto. She frequently thinks about what stories can teach us about the diversity of the city and is very excited to learn more about the Ward and histories of migration in Toronto by working on the Block by Block project.

Vidhya Elango est une jeune femme de banlieue de deuxième génération qui vit présentement au centre-ville de Toronto. Ses parents sont arrivés à la RGT à la fin des années 1980 en passant par les États-Unis. Vidhya est actuellement en voie d’obtenir un diplôme en linguistique et en anthropologie à la University of Toronto. Elle réfléchit souvent à ce que les récits peuvent nous apprendre au sujet de la diversité de la ville et est très enthousiaste d’en apprendre plus au sujet du Ward et des histoires de migration à Toronto en travaillant sur le projet Quartier par quartier.


Jennifer Su, Toronto Fellow, Block by Block

Jennifer Su is a Toronto-based artist working primarily in photography and film. She is interested in exploring themes of identity, community, and resistance through storytelling. Her first short film, 36 Questions,won the DGC and WIFT-T award at the Reel Asian International Film Festival. She is currently finishing up her undergraduate degree in socio-cultural anthropology at the University of Toronto.

Jennifer was born and raised in Southern Ontario, spending most of her childhood in the diverse suburb of Mississauga, Ontario. Her parents were born in Vietnam and met at a refugee camp in Hong Kong before settling in Canada.

Jennifer Su est une artiste établie à Toronto qui travaille principalement en photographie et en cinéma. Elle s’intéresse aux thèmes de l’identité, de  la communauté et de la résistance à travers les récits. Son premier court-métrage, 36 Questions,a gagné les prix DGC et WIFT-T au Reel Asian International Film Festival. Elle termine actuellement son baccalauréat en anthropologie socioculturelle à la University of Toronto.

Jennifer est née et a grandi dans le sud de l’Ontario et a passé une grande partie de sa jeunesse dans la banlieue diversifiée de Mississauga, en Ontario. Ses parents sont nés au Vietnam et se sont rencontrés dans un camp de réfugiés à Hong Kong avant de s’établir au Canada.


Maxwell Adjei, Montreal Fellow, Block by Block

Born and raised in Montreal, Maxwell Adjei is a Graphic Designer and YouTuber. He currently works at the CardboardBox Project and is also the Co-founder of Trooth Empire, which is a social enterprise that educates, empowers and evolves the minds of youth through social media and apparel.

Maxwell holds a DEC in Illustration & Design from Dawson College.

His Mother immigrated from St. Vincent and The Grenadines and his father from Ghana.

Maxwell Adjei est né et a grandit à Montréal et est un graphiste et un praticien de la chaine YouTube. Il travaille présentement au CardboardBox Project et est aussi co-fondateur du Trooth Empire, une entreprise sociale qui instruit, habilite et fait évoluer les esprits des jeunes à travers les médias sociaux et les vêtements.

Maxwell détient un DEC en illustration et design de Dawson College.

Sa mère a immigré de St. Vincent-et-les-Grenadines et son père du Ghana.


Leah Woolner, Montreal Fellow, Block by Block

Passionate about art and social justice, Leah Woolner holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia University and a Masters of Social Work from McGill University. She currently works at McGill as a research assistant and coordinator of a multi-country research project that explores the perspectives and experiences of children born of wartime rape. She continues to learn about her own Filipino heritage and culture as a community organizer at PINAY Quebec, a grassroots not-for-profit organization for Filipina migrants in Montreal.

Leah Woolner, boursière pour Montréal, Quartier par quartier

Passionnée des arts et de la justice sociale, Leah Woolner détient un baccalauréat en arts plastiques de l’Université Concordia ainsi qu’une maitrise en travail social de l’Université McGill. Elle travaille actuellement à McGill en tant qu’assistante de recherche et coordonnatrice pour un projet de recherche sur de multiples pays qui explore les perspectives et les expériences des enfants nés du viol de guerre. Elle continue d’en apprendre sur sa propre culture et son patrimoine philippins en tant qu’organisatrice communautaire à PINAY Québec, un organisme populaire sans but lucratif pour les migrants philippins à Montréal.


Dominique Bautista, Vancouver Fellow, Block by Block

With roots across the trans-pacific in Southern China and the Philippines, Dominique was the first in her family to be born and raised in Vancouver. With a background in humanities, education and migration studies, she loves time spent with elders telling stories and supporting community-based education. Angela Ho, Vancouver Fellow, Block by Block

Angela Ho is a second generation Chinese Canadian born and raised in Vancouver, BC. Currently, Angela is majoring in Geography and minoring in Asian Canadian Studies at the University of British Columbia. Angela finds a lot of joy in using digital media as a way to learn and connect with the communities that she is embedded in, and is excited to be a part of the Block by Block Vancouver team this summer.

Actuellement, Angela complète une majeure en géographie et une mineure en études asiatiques canadiennes à la University of British Columbia. Elle retire beaucoup de joie de l’utilisation des médias numériques en tant que manière d’apprendre et d’établir des liens avec les communautés dans lesquelles elle est intégrée; aussi, elle est ravie de faire partie de l’équipe de Quartier par quartier de Vancouver cet été.
